Mat was my English tutor for year 12. I began tutoring just before the trial exams, and in the time between the trials and the hsc I noticed a significant improvement in my ability to interpret stimulus myself. Mat’s tutoring sessions are very well planned and allowed me to focus on specific areas I needed to improve on. I would 100% recommend Mat as an English tutor, as he helped me a lot to achieve the best I could for the hsc English exams.

Newcastle, HSC 2020Mat is an incredible English tutor and has been supporting me in my learning for 5 years and most of my high school period. He genuinely loves English and teaching his students, and that comes across so clearly in our weekly lessons. Every lesson we had was different and exciting with new content, skills or practice exercises and unseen texts. Mat helped me greatly improve my essay writing which was so helpful when I studied the International Baccalaureate (IB). I would especially like to acknowledge and appreciate his willingness to explore a completely different course, the IB, despite his focus on HSC in his other students. Mat always ensured that he knew my texts well, even with some very obscure novels, and continually challenged me to develop new and fresh readings of the texts. He also supplemented my own ideas with unique thoughts of his own, which never ceased to provoke interesting conversations about different perspectives on the texts. I cannot recommend Mat enough, not only in his skill and expertise in English, but also for his friendly and laid-back character. I strongly believe that all students would greatly benefit from Mat's teaching. With Mat's incredible guidance and advice, I am proud to say that I have achieved the highest grade in English Higher Level for my final exams, and placed first in my cohort in the subject. Thank you so much Mat!

Sydney Grammar, HSC 2020About Mathew
B.A. B.Ed. University of New South Wales
Mathew has been tutoring English since 1998 and despite it being a part time gig for much of that time, demand for his services increased so much that he is now tutoring full-time. He has four kids and is married to Debbie who works in the tech industry. (Hence this awesome website!) In his spare time Mat enjoys playing golf, going to the gym, reading, writing short stories – he occasionally appears in feature films, on TV or in print advertisements. He also enjoys editing copy written by his well-meaning wife… (how did I do?)

FAQs
How do I pay?
I'll send an invoice via email with a link, so you can pay securely online via credit card or direct debit transfer.
What do I need for online tutoring?
A Skype account with a microphone and webcam. You'll also need a Google account with access to Google Docs.
What if I can't attend my lesson?
No problem, these things happen. Let me know which lesson you can't attend and we'll reschedule it. I don't make my students pay for lessons they don't have.
Do you tutor in person?
Yes! My home office is a five minute walk from a train station. We have an air conditioned office, with a nice view of the backyard and you can use our WiFi and charge your phone. During lessons we might get an unannounced visit from our dog (Bear) and it's very likely one of the kids will be playing in the backyard as well.
Do I pay week by week or by school term?
It's up to you. I offer a casual rate and a discounted rate if you pay for the whole term (10 lessons). Get in touch to learn more.
Are you a qualified teacher?
I have a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (English Literature) from the University of New South Wales.
